based on the latest Luxury Consignment Report from The Real
Regardless of familial ties, clothes from premium fashion companies are now being passed down to another generation (and in wonderful shape) thanks to the Internet-driven high tide of vintage and designer apparel. Previously a specialised, creative method to update one’s clothing, vintage shopping is now the mainstream, especially among Gen Z. Reselling is becoming a recognised component of modern video games. Today, even luxury things that are brand new are acquired with the idea of their possible resale worth. There is no surprise that TikTok is replete with videos offering advice on which luxury goods and brands retain worth over time.
The RealReal, a merchant, published its 2022 Luxury Consignment Report on January 13; as the report’s name implies, it looks at trends and statistics related to luxury consignment. We can attest that the data clearly reflects the surge in vintage reselling. Rati Sahi Levesque, president of The RealReal, states in the research that “resale has undeniably become mainstream, and the luxury sector has one distinction that sets it apart: every demographic actively participates in luxury resale.” Every demo, from Gen Z to the Silent Generation, boosted their adoption of used luxury goods in 2021, and as a result, almost every brand experienced higher resale value.
According to The RealReal’s report and in no particular order, we have highlighted some of the all-time popular luxury fashion brands and on-demand ones for Gen Z below. If you are considering investing, shopping vintage (for sustainability or other reasons), or are just fascinated by the ever-changing resale world, read on.
Gucci
With Alessandro Michele in charge, Gucci has emerged as the go-to fashion brand for both younger and older generations in recent years. Since 2016, the company has maintained its devoted following while embracing celebrity inspirations like Harry Styles, Kai from EXO, and Billie Eilish – all full rockstars who speak the language of young people. It makes sense why The RealReal names it the top brand for luxury resale across all age groups.
The Louis Vuitton
The LV logo, created by Louis Vuitton, is one of the most famous and often imitated logos in the world. Virgil Abloh and the celebrities chosen to represent the brand, such as supergroup BTS and Squid Game’s breakout star Hoyeon Jung, both of whom serve as global ambassadors for the luxury brand, have helped it take on this ability to be edgy and new. This is why Gen Z loves it.
Retro Prada
They are distinct entities, yes. Prada from the past is in high demand. Its worth has climbed 38% in the past year, according to The RealReal. Notably, the growth coincides with the resurgence of nylon from Prada.
Gaultier, Jean Paul
The 1990s are still very much alive. According to the RealReal research, Jean Paul Gaultier has become one of Gen Z’s top niche brands, which makes perfect sense given that the brand’s resale value has climbed by 70% in the past year. Current fashion trends are greatly influenced by rock and roll aesthetics, mesh, and printed body con clothing. (Zendaya did, in fact, sport some classic Jean Paul Gaultier during the second season of Euphoria!)
Chanel
The clothes even increase in value over time, making Chanel one of the major participants in the resale market. Celebrities associated with Chanel have included girls like Kristen Stewart and Kaia Gerber.
Rag & Bon
One of Gen Z and millennials’ preferred modern brands to resale is Rag & Bone. It is renowned for its exquisitely crafted classics and wardrobe essentials.
Vivin Westwood
The impact of Vivienne Westwood on contemporary style is quite evident. It makes perfect sense that the brand’s resale value has increased 26% this year, considering the printed corsets that celebrities like Bella Hadid are sporting, the highly sought-after spaceship logo charm necklaces, and the fact that every K-pop girl is wearing them right now.
Tory Burch
One of the most popular brands purchased by consumers of all ages is Tory Burch. Towards the end of the 2000s, Tory Burch was one of the most well-known modern women’s fashion labels.
Mugler, Thierry
According to The RealReal, the resale value of legendary designer Thierry Mugler increased by 70% this year. Vintage Celebrities including Kim Kardashian, Megan Fox, and Cardi B have recently worn Thierry Mugler on red carpets.
Missoni
That Girl, you might be aware of Missoni. This year, the resale value of the Italian luxury brand climbed by 20%, particularly for its knitwear.
